Learn about Bertha Palmer, Chicago socialite, philanthropist and the wife of millionaire real estate magnate Potter Palmer. A pace-setting arts patron, Bertha Palmer is best remembered for her outstanding Impressionist collection, now at the Art Institute of Chicago. Shrewd, stylish and witty, she presided over Chicago's glittering society scene for quarter of a century and was hostess to the world during the World's Columbian Exposition of 1893.
This program is made possible by a grant from the Illinois Humanities Council. Our presenter, Leslie Goddard is a member of the Road Scholars Speakers Bureau. She earned her PhD from Northwestern University in an interdisciplinary field the covered U.S. history, women's studies and theater. She lectures extensively at museums, historical societies, civic organizations and schools.
The 2009 AAUW Home Tour
This year’s home tour will take place on Sunday, October 4th from 11am to 5pm. We are celebrating our fifty-eighth annual tour. The tour is our major fund raiser and we take great pride in its continuing success. We are currently designing this year’s tour in which we will select homes that reflect the beauty and pride evident in our community, along with their unique charm and integrity.
As in the past, money raised during the tour will be used for scholarships awarded to local high school seniors, as well as selected adult women who are returning to college. These recipients all reside in local School District #86. A smaller portion of the monies are donated to our national AAUW Educational Foundation. The Foundation supports aspiring scholars around the globe, teachers, and activists in local communities, women in critical stages of their careers, and those pursuing professions where women are underrepresented.
There will be a Refreshment/Hospitality Center located at the Community House at the Corner of Madison and 8th Street in Hinsdale the day of the tour. In addition we will have boutique shopping at this location. Items from local florists and merchants will be available for sale.
We look forward to you joining us for another very special Home Tour.
